Naresh Ajwani, Advisor
Naresh has served internet community since 1999 in various positions and roles, advocating internet as the best leveller for diversified interests. He has been championing the concept of shared resources viz., public internet kiosks/cybercafés for internet users at the bottom of pyramid. For all his volunteer services/work, he earns as a professional (Managing Director – Vihaan Networks Ltd.) and ensures that his contribution/services as civil society are free of any funding.

His journey started with serving hinterland of India as President – Sify, India’s first private ISP, with setting up of assistance internet kiosk model – iWays in 100s of small cities across India, thereby, taking up the cause of such facilitators. It is due to his efforts that thousands of people have been exposed to free of cost Internet Learning Programme. While this programme has been recommended by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to Government, it has also got Digital Literacy’s Editor’s Choice Award (USA).

Besides advocating for policies for promoting right environment for ISPs as Secretary-ISPAI, in his capacity as NIXI Director, amongst the other contributions, he had conducted a study on promotion of ccTLD (.in). His role to get NIR for India has been eulogized by various stakeholders at important platforms.

Along with other stake holders, he was instrumental behind the success of IGF 2008, Hyderabad, India. With his multiple hats, serving FICCI as Chairman-Subcommittee Broadband & MAG Member, co-organized 1st India Internet Governance Conference, prelude to India IGF & for sharing position at IGF 2012, Baku. His contribution there was duly appreciated. He is strong advocate of MAG in every kind of impactful decision on promotion of internet and has played a key role in desired balancing across diverse groups. His joint initiative of MAG for IGF India, initiated many years back, is now finally taking shape.

Being a key member of Industry Associations like TAIPA (Tower & Infrastructure Providers Association), he contributed immensely for infra-status for the Industry.

Also in the Advisory body of BBNL (Bharat Broadband Limited), Naresh is currently strongly committed to manufacturing environment in the country especially, for telecom equipments.

Not only has he looked after the interest of Indian internet community but has also been responsible for promoting the same at international levels. Co-founder member of IIIA (International Internet Industry Alliance), Naresh has served community at Asia Pacific level as NRO-NC APNIC and globally, as Vice Chairman, Address Council for ICANN.
